Itinerary

1
Day 1
Marrakesh – Tizi-n-Tichka – Ksar Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura Valley – Dades Gorge
Our Morocco desert tour from Marrakech to Chefchaouen begins in the Marrakech medina. We rise across the High Atlas Mountains to Tizi n’Tichka, the highest pass at 2260 meters. You can see the Amazigh landscape as we walk through adobe settlements, terraced farms, and lovely countryside. Before descending to explore the ksar of Ait Benhaddou, a fortified bastion on the historic salt caravan path to Timbuktu, we will take a picture break from the pass. This is also a popular filmmaking site, with numerous films shot here. After lunch, we travel to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa” because of the numerous films made there. We next travel via the Skoura Palm Groves, on to Kelaat M’gouna: the Valley of the Roses, and on to the Dades Gorge via the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. This is a tour filled with stunning landscape, kasbahs at every turn, and valleys brimming with fruits, flowers, and vegetables. An overnight stay awaits you at a typical Moroccan guesthouse.

Day 2
Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Merzouga
After breakfast, we go from this magnificent gorge to see another farther down the valley. In Tinghir, we follow the route up to the Todra Gorge, a popular destination for international rock climbers due to its 300-meter vertical fault and crystalline glacial river. This pink-tinged canyon was produced by glacial action and is just 10 meters wide at its narrowest point. Nomads may be seen filling water jugs with their donkeys. After a lunch break, we continue south through palm trees and Berber settlements with adobe kasbahs till the scenery transforms and the Erg Chebbi dunes and Merzouga greet us. Following a welcoming mint tea, we will ride a camel over the dunes to our nomadic-style tent, where supper and local music will be served beneath a star-filled sky.

Day 3
Merzouga - Ziz Valley - Midelt - Azrou - Fes
Just before sunrise is one of the most serene periods of the day. Your camel guide will wake you up early in the morning so you may experience possibly the most amazing sunrise of your life. The way the light changes when the sun rises may be breathtaking. You will then ride your camel back to the hotel for a well-deserved breakfast and, if desired, a shower. Our drive to Fes will then continue via Erfoud, Aoufous, and Errachidia down the picturesque Ziz Valley formed in volcanic rock, and across the Tizi n’Talghemt pass to Midelt, where we will stop for lunch and refresh with a glass of mint tea. We will be in the Middle Atlas by now, home of the huge cedar trees and the endemic Barbary monkeys observed at Azrou. They are entertaining to watch and frequently grab food from passing automobiles. Then we travel to Ifrane, sometimes known as Little Switzerland due to its alpine-style architecture, where we will stop for a photo and a cup of coffee before arriving at Fes’ Imperial City and the old medina. Half-board will be provided in a typical riad.

Day 4
Explore Fes and drive to Chefchaouen
After breakfast, we will have a half-day guided tour of the spiritual and cultural medieval city, followed by lunch to the Roman remains of Volubilis for another cultural tour of ancient lives with massive columns and beautiful mosaics. We travel north through lovely countryside full of wildflowers and rolling farms to reach the rocky Rif Mountains and the secret medina of Chefchaouen. Overnight stay at a riad, including breakfast. We propose having supper in the atmospheric square.
